OUR SHORT VERDICT

The RTX 5060 delivers a noticeable performance uplift, but moving from the RTX 3060 12GB to a new 8GB card is a questionable way to spend upgrade money for texture-heavy new games.

More frames are tempting, but the memory tradeoff matters.

Who should buy, and who should wait?

The RTX 5060 delivers a noticeable performance uplift, but moving from the RTX 3060 12GB to a new 8GB card is a questionable way to spend upgrade money for texture-heavy new games.

The sneaky problem: 12GB down to 8GB

The RTX 3060 has 12GB of video memory, while the RTX 5060 carries 8GB. That gap does not mean the 3060 is generally faster; it clearly is not in this raster test suite. But modern games can run into memory ceilings, and changing texture quality to stay within a smaller budget can blunt the excitement of a hardware swap.

What sort of player could still buy the 5060?

For competitive 1080p titles at reduced settings, the newer card brings higher raster output, newer Nvidia features, and a relatively modest power draw. If you play mostly esports and have a cheap, reliable board listing, it can be reasonable. Do not buy it just because the model number is bigger.

Where I would put the money instead

For demanding single-player games or a move to 1440p, compare the RX 9060 XT 16GB and the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. Both remove the immediate 8GB-capacity anxiety, though price, ray tracing, and software support must decide the final purchase. If your 3060 already meets your monitor target, saving is a valid answer.

The honest reason to skip: Keep the RTX 3060 if 1080p games feel smooth today. Passing on a modest upgrade now can free up the budget for a more decisive jump.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher average FPS guarantee it in every game?

No. Different games weight shader performance, VRAM, ray tracing and upscaling very differently. These figures use the same June 2026 raster benchmark suite at Ultra settings. Look up your most-played games separately.

Can I install either card in my existing computer?

Often, but do not assume it. Board-partner dimensions, motherboard slot clearance, front radiator position, PCIe power cables and PSU health all matter. Use our GPU fit guide and the actual manufacturer's spec sheet.

Should I wait for prices to fall?

Waiting is a rational option when your current GPU handles your games and contemporary store prices are high. Set a personal price ceiling based on how much performance improvement you actually need.
