RTX 4060 vs RTX 5060: An Upgrade to Skip?

Why the generation change alone rarely justifies a purchase.

OUR SHORT VERDICT

For most RTX 4060 owners, swapping into the RTX 5060 is not a smart standalone upgrade. The newer card is faster, but it retains an 8GB limit and rarely changes the class of gaming you can comfortably target.

Same 8GB class, without a transformative native-raster jump.

Who should buy, and who should wait?

For most RTX 4060 owners, swapping into the RTX 5060 is not a smart standalone upgrade. The newer card is faster, but it retains an 8GB limit and rarely changes the class of gaming you can comfortably target.

A generation newer is not an entire tier higher

The 4060 and 5060 both target mainstream gaming. Their native raster scores separate them, but not in the way a move from entry 1080p to confident 4K would. When you include the cost of selling your old card, transaction friction, and the current store price, the opportunity cost rises quickly.

Upscaling and frame generation are a different conversation

RTX 50-series supports newer generation-specific Nvidia software capabilities, and supported games can feel smoother with those features enabled. Generated frames are not equivalent to higher native rendering throughput or lower input latency. Base the purchase on what you actually play and how sensitive you are to latency.

What would count as a meaningful move?

If you want high-refresh 1440p in demanding titles, start comparisons at substantially higher performance levels, such as RTX 5070 or RX 9070, when your budget and system allow. You might also be better served by staying put and adjusting a few graphics settings.

The honest reason to skip: Stay with the RTX 4060 unless a very specific game or feature makes this modest upgrade unusually valuable to you.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher average FPS guarantee it in every game?

No. Different games weight shader performance, VRAM, ray tracing and upscaling very differently. These figures use the same June 2026 raster benchmark suite at Ultra settings. Look up your most-played games separately.

Can I install either card in my existing computer?

Often, but do not assume it. Board-partner dimensions, motherboard slot clearance, front radiator position, PCIe power cables and PSU health all matter. Use our GPU fit guide and the actual manufacturer's spec sheet.

Should I wait for prices to fall?

Waiting is a rational option when your current GPU handles your games and contemporary store prices are high. Set a personal price ceiling based on how much performance improvement you actually need.
