The short answer

For 1080p 60Hz and lighter games, keep your RTX 3060 12GB until it is genuinely holding you back. For demanding 1440p games with high refresh ambitions, an RX 9070, RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT can represent a large and noticeable step up. Do not replace it just because it is an older generation.

What the raster benchmarks indicate

In the June 2026 Tom’s Hardware ultra raster suite, the RTX 3060 12GB averaged about 41.9 FPS at 1440p. The RTX 5060 averaged about 59.8; the RX 9060 XT 16GB about 67.3; the RTX 5070 about 96.4; and the RX 9070 about 104.0. These are cross-game averages, not predictions for Cyberpunk, Fortnite, or other individual titles.

When to keep it

Keep the RTX 3060 if you mainly play competitive shooters at optimized settings, your current games run comfortably, or your upgrade budget would buy only a small improvement. Its 12GB VRAM is not a substitute for fast silicon, but it can be helpful in games that use lots of texture memory.

When to move up

A 1440p 144Hz monitor, visual-heavy new releases, or consistent frame-time problems at settings you care about are good reasons to consider a real upgrade. Investigate whether the CPU is limiting performance first. If you rely on CUDA or ray tracing, factor in Nvidia ecosystem advantages; if you prioritize raster FPS per dollar, compare current Radeon selling prices.

The buyer checklist

Measure the space inside your PC, check PSU wattage and PCIe power connectors, review the exact product model, and check return terms. An inflated GPU listing can turn a good chip into a bad deal.

About our numbers: The GPU comparisons on this page use the June 2026 Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy, an external cross-game benchmark suite. Dated pricing context, when used, comes from the October 2026 buying guide. Benchmark averages are not individual-game promises. We do not have live retailer prices.

The simplest way to answer your question: Run the free upgrade verdict tool with the card you already own, your display, and your budget. It is designed to say “keep” when the leap is too small.

Before checkout: Use our GPU fit and clearance calculator to check card length, radiator space, thickness and cable clearance.
